I just took my 115lb chesapeake bay retriever female to the vet and she has gained 4lbs with the recent snow and ice preventing us from going on our long walks. What should I do? Should I stop feeding here the kibble dog food. I do have some orijen which is grain free. How many cups of food should she have to lose at least 15lbs
Hi Patricia,
Remember grain free is higher in calories. If it's working, don't change it. If he needed to reduce a lot of weight, you may consider going to a lower calorie dry food. You can reduce the amount you feed daily and replace that with some ground green beans. They are high in fiber and will give him a fuller feeling than just feeding less.
Whatever premium food you feed, just look on the back of the bag for proper amount to feed for his weight, then reduce that by about a third and add the green beans and/or mixed vegetables. Be sure to grind them in a food processer. You can then store them in a plastic container and scoop out some for each meal.
It's always a good idea to keep fresh meat and a little ground vegetables in your pets diet. They need live food to thrive, just as humans do.
See my page on Healthy Dog Food to read more. It will also have links to other important pages for complete nutrition. It's extremely important to get enzymes and probiotics into their diet to help digestion and weight control.
