Homemade dog food is a viable alternative to feeding raw dog food. It’s not our first choice because of our limited time, but we make some occasionally for our dogs. Again, rounded variety meals keeps the system going strong. Mix things up. Different proteins, grains, vegetables, etc.
If you have the time it can be very rewarding to fix your dogs meals. My mom does this very well. She is not a fan of feeding her babies raw no matter what I tell her. I make sure she then gets the supplements her dogs need for enzymes and pro-biotic's.
She mixes up some meat, vegetables, rice and/or barley in a big pot. After cooking she packages it up in serving size containers for her 4 dogs and freezes it. She goes through this routine on a weekly basis.
<< >>After thawing their meal, she will add the supplements to round it out. This usually consists of a good multivitamin with enzymes, fish oil and occasionally yogurt or cottage cheese. She will also include a little premium kibble just to insure they are some of the calcium and magnesium they need. You can also do this with supplementation.
The yogurt and cottage cheese are great for adding the pro-biotic's. Homemade meals usually will lack these good for you bacteria that your digestive tract needs so badly. A great deal of your immune system stems from your digestive tract so you need to keep that healthy with pro-biotic's. Especially if your dog has had anti-biotic's. You want to wait on giving any pro-biotic's while you’re on anti-biotic's. They do the opposite thing. Anti-biotic's wipe out all bacteria, the good and the bad. So it’s important to replace the good bacteria as soon as you can after. Then regular supplementation will greatly benefit their lives.
I’ve read that a lot of holistic practitioners like to use kefir instead of yogurt in their home cooked meals. Kefir is a more potent form for pro-biotic's than yogurt. I’ve never tried it on our dogs but I’m sure looking into it. For some reason it’s not as plentiful as yogurt.
There are so many options for homemade dog food. I can give you a basic list of possible choices to feed.
You can also do some of each. Homemade Dog Food for the morning meal and feed raw, canned or kibble for there evening meal.
It’s usually best to only feed raw food no more than five days out of a week. This will allow the kidneys enough time to process the remains of the meat and clean out the system.
Fasting one day a week also has been shown to have tremendous benefits. Trying to get your dog to agree with that isn’t easy. It is how things are made to work in nature. A meat eater will hunt, kill and eat maybe only several times in a week. The other days are rest and digestion.
Below are some options for homemade dog food. Just remember to make sure they are getting everything they need. It doesn’t have to be in one meal but overall. Make sure to check out those books I mentioned to keep you in balance as you’re learning.
Remember whenever you switch from different types of feedings, start slow and work up. Blending over a week or two helps the transition.

As I mentioned before, you can prepare this food and freeze it in portion size container for however many you are cooking for.
Remember to take out what you need for the next day when you pull out today's container.
Warm up the food to room temperature with some hot water. Then add necessary supplements such as vitamin C, flax oil, salmon oil, vitamin E etc.
